Before she could take another swing, Artis recomposed himself and grabbed her wrist. "I don't think so," he said. His teasing mood had vanished; his eyes were narrowed in anger, his face taut. "Playtime is over."

Adelaide beat on his wrist, but it wasn't worth it- he was too strong. She continued to struggled though.

Artis spun her around and pulled him against his chest, grabbing her other wrist as well and trapping her effectively. "I'll make this easy for you," he hissed in her ear. "Stop struggling or I'll kill you."

Adelaide tensed but his words were effective; she instantly stopped trying to get away. But she was still terrified.

Artis dragged her toward the door and cracked it open to peer outside. His group of bandits were mostly either dead or subdued, and Kai was nowhere in sight. "Where are you?" he murmured. He wasn't sure he could get out on his own. The crew would stop him.

Kai had joined the fighting, and was still trying to fight the rest of the crew, after they had made a miraculous comeback. He shot one crewmember through his eye with a coin. He, too, was wondering where his partner was.

Artis hauled Adelaide out of the room when he spotted Kai. At first, no one noticed him, but then one of the crewmembers shouted out and gestured wildly toward Artis and the girl. "Don't move!" Artis called. "Or I'll kill her!"

Adelaide squeezed her eyes shut in fear when he said this, her arms wrenched painfully behind her back. Kai smirked to himself and easily made his way through the crowd of crewmembers to where she and Artis were. "Well done," Kai said to his ally.

Kai nodded. He walked behind Artis to ensure their safety as they walked back onto their own boat.

Artis threw the noblewoman down on the deck as soon as they reached the boat. He shoved off, leaving the few of their men that still lived behind. They were expendable, anyway.

Adelaide gave a sharp yelp of pain as she landed, but immediately fell quiet again, fearful of what the man might do if she put one food out of line.

Artis glanced at Kai before turning to watch the boat they'd attacked move into the distance. After a few seconds, his eyes narrowed and he stepped forward, leaning against the railing. "Do you see that?" he said, gesturing at the two dark forms on the shore, maybe twenty strides from the boat.

Artis shook his head. They were too far away to make out clearly, especially with the rate the ash was falling at by that point. From what he could see, they were both male and their clothing clung to them as if they'd been in the river. One of them was dressed all in black. "They must have escaped the attack."
