Nikoda kept a good pace all seven blocks to deliver her fist message of the day. The morning was still cool, but the ash was falling in full force, and she had to keep brushing it out of her hair. It was annoying to say the least. Eventually she reached her target, a captain in the Garrison. She handed over the message and waited impatiently for him to read it and give her one in return. She thought it was strange that, as a scribe, they somehow thought running messages made sense for her. She didn't even have to write anything half the time. Some of the soldiers couldn't read or write, in which case she usually just committed the message to memory. Most of the time she didn't even know what the written message was. So here she was, running around the city when she could be drafting important documents. Come to think of it, she wasn't sure which would be worse. Maybe she should be grateful for a chance to get some outdoor activity.
Eventually the captain scrawled a return message--evidently he was one who could write--and handed it back. Without a word, Koda turned and jogged off the way she'd come, weaving through the citizens on the street.

Nearby, some trouble was brewing. Noah Cooke, a decent pickpocket, had his eyes on a noble who was shopping in the market. He chewed on a piece of brown straw as he sat in the shadows beside a stall, but before he could strike, something else caught his eye. Someone. He watche the messenger as she jogged by, wondering what kind of message she had. He decided to follow her, and maybe pick pocket her.

At that point, Koda's curl hair was up in a ponytail, but it still bounced and swayed as she ran. A light sheen of sweat coated her forehead, but she was hardly out of breath even after her run all the way there, and she still looked as stunning as ever. If only she wasn't wearing the unflattering Garrison uniform. Oh, well. Hopefully she wouldn't be running messages all day.
She didn't even glance at Noah as she passed him, her eyes focused ahead of her. Despite the tedious nature of it, she took her job very seriously.

Noah smiled, his eyes narrowing. She was beautiful, and it would be interesting to see how she would react to beig pick pocketed.

Koda grimaced and slowed, eventually coming to a stop. There was some kind of commotion going on in front of her, and a small crowd blocked the street. She'd either have to push her way through or find a different route. A different route was really the best choice. She could just jog over a street and continue on. The decision made, she backtracked, having to shove a little to get away, as more people had gathered behind her.

Momentarily, Noah paused to wonder what the commotion was, but he shook it off and tried not to lose her in the crowd. There she was! He followed quickly and silently, looking for where her money or valuables might be.

Koda's uniform consisted of loose pants--unusual for women--and a black shirt with the Garrison's emblem on it. She had no pockets, only a small pouch that carried the message, some paper and a quill, and a few coins should she need them. She certainly wasn't wearing any jewelry or anything else valuable.

Noah noticed what she was wearing and that she didn't wear anything- but the pouch. In a swift series of motions, he ran into her and tried wrenching the pouch off her.

Koda felt the tug at her belt. Just as the tie began to give, her hand shot down and grabbed his wrist in a vice-like grip. Without pausing, she yanked his arm and whirled him around so he was facing her. "And what do you think you're doing?" she demanded.

Noah jumped when she grabbed his wrist and tried wrenching away. "Hey, I'm just curious!" he protested, flashing a bright smile. "Whatcha carrying?"

"It's none of your business," Nikoda said coldly. "In fact, it's strict Garrison business, so you should be on your way if you don't want to get arrested."

Noah gave a lazy smile. "You? Arrest me? Ha. That'll be the day."

Koda raised an eyebrow. "Well, you're standing right in front of me, guilty of trying to rob me. I think I could arrest you pretty easily if I wanted to."

"Maybe. But you would have to catch me first," he said, crossing his arms scornfully.

Nikoda grinned at his challenge. "I run messages half the day," she said. "I think I can keep up with a low-life thief." In fact, his challenge was enough to make her consider being late to deliver her message. Chasing a skaa thief sounded like so much more fun.
