Ava glared at him but stayed quiet as soon as she noticed the other man.

The man's eyes shifted to Ava and curiosity flashed across his face. "And who is the young lady?"

"A friend of mine," Kol replied. "One that your men are going to keep their hands off of. Understood?"

The man raised an eyebrow. "I can't make any promises, but I'll tell them to leave her alone."

Ava met his gaze without fear, her arms crossed against her chest. She almost looked like she was daring somebody to mess with her.

Amusement flickered across his face and he chuckled. "Ask Skell to show you where you'll be sleeping."

"Much the same as last time, I imagine?" Kol said. The man didn't respond, instead taking a seat at his desk again. Kol gave a soft laugh and moved away from the office.

Ava watched the man for a second longer before following Kol.

Kol spoke briefly with the man who had let them in, and then he followed the man--Skell--down a different hallway and up a creaky staircase. Doorless rooms lined the upstairs hallway, and as they passed they could catch glimpses of the people inside. It was early morning, but much of the underground skaa living here had yet to rise. Unlike the workers, they didn't have to be up at sunrise to labor away.

Ava kept tense, knowing that even a small show of weakness would count as an invitation to the men in here to try something. As a healer, she didn't want somebody's blood on her hands.
