It was one of those rare moments in Nikolai's life when he actually had to go shopping. Absolutely terrifying.
Sighing slightly, Nikolai perused the different booths, looking for fabric. Ever since Adelaide's dress, Nikolai practically had nobles flooding in. It was great for business, but was bad for his mental health. And a true test of his patience. But then again, the more money he had the more he could help his mother. So, putting his mask on, Nikolai had entertained them all, surviving the encounters.
Right now, he could finally drop the mask, mulling over two pieces of cloth. "Hrmm..... Which one...." He mused, trying to decide between a red color and a blue color.

Athena loved the marketplace. It was always busy, bustling with people and clamor, and there was always the telltale nicker of horses and the shift of their heavy hooves on the ground. She went around giving each one a small treat of a slice of apple or a diced carrot piece, sometimes sharing a carrot or biting an apple slice before giving it off. She rewarded each horse with a pat and stroke, a kiss on the muzzle or between wide, kind eyes. Some enjoyed it when she lifted their heavy, hot, leather halters and scratched behind their ears, or just under their round, full bellies. She made small noises as she went, humming or even singing softly, the horses wanting to follow after her soft, musical voice.
Athena glanced up at a man, peering at up with wide, gentle brown eyes before looking away and murmuring shyly, "Blue is a good color, sir."

Nikolai blinked when he heard a voice. He glanced over to see a younger girl standing near him. "Oh!" He said, looking back to the two cloths. She did have a point. The blue seemed much nicer. Chuckling, Nikolia put the red piece down. "I think you may be right! Good eye, Miss...?" He trailed off, raising an eyebrow

"I'm just Athena," She murmured and glanced away, doe eyes averted, "Thank you for the compliment, sir."

Nikolai smiled. "Athena? Well then, thank you miss Athena! I feared I was going to be standing here for the rest of the day!" He said with a sigh. "Just imagine, all that time wasted! I have you to thank for saving me." He said, chuckling. "And please accept the compliment!" He added before leaning in almost conspiratorially. "Because I don't give them often." He admitted before standing again

She blinked in rapid surprise and nodded, her braid of dark hair swinging forward, "Ah.. Thank you, I suppose. Mister...?"

"Nikolai!" He said, holding out his hand for her to shake. "Nikolai Volkov, at your service!" He said with a laugh. "Good to meet you! What brings you to the market?"

"The horses," Athena shook his hand and smiled softly, glancing over at the large Gypsy Vanner mare stationed beside a small vegetable cart, "I visit every day. I try not to disappoint."

Nikolai glanced over. "Horses, eh? Magnificent creatures really. Just a tad too much on the smelly side for my tastes, but I can certainly see why you'd love them. They do seem like the lovable, loyal sort. Which is rare around here honestly." Nikolai mused with a shrug. "I just stick to my cloth and sewing. Best thing is that they don't talk back to me."

She laughed, warm and bright, and then was silent, picking at the carrot in her fingers, lifting a small bit and nibbling at it. "I love them. They're strong and smart and easily excited by something new and exciting. They really are the best of all worlds."

The live he girl had for the animals was so evident it was almost palpable. Nikolai chuckled slightly at the sight. "You sure seem to adore the big lugs. Good for you! So, I take it your a stable hand or master, hmm? Since you seem so familiar with them." He guessed.

"Oh, no, sir. Nothing as strong as that," She shook her head, "I just help train the riding horses here in the city." She looked up at him from under her lashes, a meek sort of look, and blushed, averting her gaze, "I'm not very well known, but I hope to go to the capital and work for the Lord."
