Mikael slowly made his way down the steps of questionable integrity. He carried a tray with a cup of water and a bowl of gruel. With each step he took toward the secret room beneath the shop, he watched the water carefully so as to not spill it. He knew if he returned and asked for more, they wouldn't refill it. This would be all the water the poor prisoner got.
He ducked under the low beam at the last step and then set down the tray on a small table there. An oil lamp and matches sat there, too. He struck a match and lit the lamp, casting faint light across the small room.

Adelaide looked quite a sight, sitting on the floor of the secret room. Her hair was tangled and dirty, her dress filthy from not having been changed. Her eyes, unused to the light, squinted as he lit a lantern in the room, and she struggled slightly against her restraints. Dark bags had gathered underneath her eyes, showing that she hadn't slept much or well since she had been moved here. But she noticed that the man had set down food and water on the table and she stopped struggling, lest he refused to give it to her.

Mikael kept his face carefully blank as he brought the tray to the young woman. He set it down and took a step back, studying her silently. She didn't look much like a noblewoman in her current state. Aside from being filthy, she didn't display the arrogance he was used to. He supposed being kept in a basement will do that. His lips almost curled up at the thought of noblewomen, but he fought back the expression. You should eat."

Adelaide could tell that he was fighting back a grin, she assumed, at her current state and the irony of it in contrast to her previous life. She glared at him hotly but didn't say anything as she slowly stood and approached the table. She clumsily picked up the spoon in the gruel and brought it to her lips. It was tasteless and mushy, but she appreciated the calories contained there.

Mikael decided to just wait while she ate, then he wouldn't have to come back down to get the tray. He leaned against the wall near the steps, watching her with a flat expression.

Adelaide looked cautiously at him, then blinked. "Who are you? What is your allegiance to these people?"

He watched her with a considering expression, his body relaxed as he stood against the wall. "My name is Mikael," he said finally. "And they freed me." It wasn't necessarily true. Kai had never had the intention of freeing the poor young man, but their attack had given him the opportunity to escape. To him, that was enough to owe the crewleader a debt.

Adelaide let her eyes fall to the gruel, but decided it might be better to not look at it as she ate it. "Why are they keeping me here? For ransom money?" she gave a small scoff. "Well, they won't get it. My parents couldn't care less, and my husband's father probably won't let him pay for my freedom. It isn't worth keeping me here." She wasn't as convicted as she sounded, but she put up a convincing farce.

Mikael shrugged. "It isn't my place to ask those questions, and I haven't. I'm sure he has plans for you, and he'll reveal them in his own time."

Adelaide gazed at him, her eyes hard. But there was fear there also, a fear of what was to come and the unknown. She dropped her gaze and stopped eating. Instead she drank a little water, trying to focus on it instead.

Mikael let the silence hang for a minute. Finally he shifted his weight. "I do not think he intends you any real harm." Then again, the young man had always had a bit of an idealistic view of Kai.

Adelaide sighed quietly, drinking the tepid water carefully. "Let us hope not."

Mikael grunted. "Are you nearly finished?" he asked, his voice no longer conversational.

Adelaide glared at him, finished off the rest of the water, and pushed the rest of the gruel back towards him. "I'm finished."

Mikael raised an eyebrow. "Not going to finish that?" he asked. "You really should."
