Noah fell silent and thought about losing his had as well. He knew he wouldn't do well without his other hand, might not even survive very long. He gave a small sigh and looke at his ankle. What if he re-broke it? That would buy him some time. But he knew he wouldn't end up doing it. he might as well just put up with the consequences.

Koda watched him, a grimace on her face. What was this? She'd never felt guilty about turning over a criminal before. Why now? He deserved his punishment as much as any other thief.

Noah sighed and picked up the mortar and pestle again, continuing to crush the leaves up.

Nikoda sighed and glanced at Ava. For some reason, a part of her wanted to confide her worries to this near stranger, if only because she had no one else to rely on. She'd rarely had moral conflicts like this to deal with. But, as Koda had never had someone to share with, she didn't know how. So she struggled with her internal problem in silence, wishing she knew what to do.

Finally, Ava intervened. "Is there anything else you need, Nikoda? I can give you some herbs for the guards' upkeep to take back."

Nikoda waved the offer off. "Thank you, but no." Perhaps it was silly, but she didn't want her superiors to know she'd been here. The paranoid side of her worried they could trace her to Noah and would know she had brought him for treatment. They probably wouldn't approve.

"Well, come on back in three days," she said quietly. "He will be mostly healed."

Nikoda gave a small nod, but looking at Noah, she knew she wouldn't return. If she didn't come back, she could put this behind her and forget about the thief that got away. What was one more skaa thief loose on the streets? She thanked Ava and hurried from the shop, not looking at Noah once.

(So, now they should meet again, but by chance.)

(Hmm... I'm thinking something happens where he gets caught by other soldiers too, and she has to choose between duty and helping him)

(Good idea.)
Noah, his ankle still stiff, was running from soldiers. He had been caught snooping around a garrison and they had assumed something was up. So they had given chase. And heels struggling to stay ahead. Soon, they were steadily gaining and, a moment later, he was caught. Soon after this he was sitting in a jail cell awaiting someone to talk to him and figure this all out.

Soft voices sounded down the hall, and then a pair of footsteps moved along the stone hallway before stopping in front of Noah's cell. Nikoda stood there, her curly hair hung loose instead of pulled back like it was when she was running messages. She looked less like a soldier and more like the beautiful woman she preferred to be, though she still wore her Garrison uniform. "You've landed yourself in quite mess," she said flatly.

He nodded glumly. "Yeah," he shrugged. "But I'll be okay."

"Not if they decide to execute you," Nikoda said. Her voice was still flat, but there was a tightness around her eyes.

"Well, then, I won't have to worry about anything after that, will I?"
